when prince announced thursday that he would perform at the monaco opera house on august 13th (in montecarlo, monaco), there were groans, accusations that he was out of touch with his fanbase and complaints about the limited advance notice from members at his leading fan site, prince.org. um, what? event marketing is all about making an occasion as special as you can afford to make it – and prince’s pockets and influence both run deep. that means extravagant locations and short notice are both strong marketing choices because they build a sense of exclusivity and urgency. what could be better for sales? all event marketers could learn something from prince. he has performed many “hit and run” shows in the past, including limited seating after-parties that always become the talk of the town.
