when i talk to recording industry clients about marketing – the turning of dreams to reality – one thing becomes clear very quickly. most don’t have the money it takes to make more money. it reminds me of a very funny louis ck skit below (he’s one of my favorite entertainers). in these situations, you have to be creative with how projects get funded. two key tools i suggest to generate the money needed are capital campaigns and referral rewards. a capital campaign is nothing more than laying out the specifics of your game plan, why you need x dollars to execute various initiatives, what the results are likely to be, and soliciting for and managing investments made. it’s the modern version of patronizing the arts. referral rewards come into play when a client introduces a friend, fellow recording industry contact or unrelated business owner to my services in exchange for free services against their project goals. when someone you refer hires me, you gain a certain amount of free services that commensurate with their his/her level of investment.
