i just read that the tennessee titans american football franchise will honor recently murdered quarterback steve mcnair with a #9 decal on their helmets this season. from a branding standpoint, i think this is a very bad move. Yes, he was an incredible athelete and team leader, played well through a great deal of pain and shared the nfl’s mvp award several years back. yes, it is a tragedy that he was murdered. however, he also cheated on his wife with multiple women and was not the “classy” role model people would like to portray. if the titans want to remember mcnair with a private ceremony, then do that. to publicly acknowledge a dishonorable person in such an honorable fashion is unfitting and bad business. just because one of your players passes away doesn’t mean you MUST honor them. what did the atlanta falcons do upon learning of michael vick’s sponsoring of dog fighting? they released him from his contract, effective immediately. he was the quarterback and leader of that team. he became dead to them.
