a friend of mine runs a small business that serves the internet technology industry. he is a customer of register.com and was having an email issue earlier today. imagine his surprise when the service tech went into a sales pitch (and not bashful about either, i might add). my friend’s response? “not a good idea to hit up a customer for more business when he already has a problem!” shame on register.com. click on for the tailend of the chat session he forwarded to me, with the participants’ names removed for privacy.
here is the tailend of the chat session between my friend and register.com.
REGISTER.COM: That should do it as there are no issues with email at this point.
REGISTER.COM: I know it is off topic but I have been informing everyone I chat with this week that we are having a buy one domain get the second domain for free special this week. Is that something that would interest you?
ME: your business cannot afford another outage.
ME: you are kidding right?
ME: you are hitting me with a sales pitch during a service call.
ME: please tell whomever suggested that idea that it’s a bad one.
REGISTER.COM: We are not having an outage now and this is a special offer we currently have that I would not want you to miss out on. Yes I am trying to get you to take advantage of this offer.
ME: not a good idea to hit up a customer for more business when he already has a problem!
