i admit that i’ve developed a bad habit of abusing three small phrases in my speech of late – 1. you know? 2. you see what i’m saying? 3. make sense? i know where this began and i’m trying to find a happy medium between being too repetitive and engaging in better sales/communications. this started when i came across a tip/reminder on “closing doors.” many of us have been caught in the situation where we ramble a bit too much and don’t check in with our audience – losing them in the process. worse, you are negotiating or selling something and you forget to get buy-in after each new mini-pitch of a benefit. of course, your close is going to be that much more complicated (if not impossible) if you haven’t closed doors all along the way with your customer/audience. the three phrases i’ve been abusing are designed to help me communicate better – though they may also be achieving the opposite effect! if I don’t succeed at selling what i believe to be a superior service, then i disappoint customers. their needs remain or are served less effectively elsewhere. not good, i know.
