first it was hbo with its 24/7 series and top-notch fight cards. now it’s showtime with its super six world boxing classic. i think the latter has the former beat. that might surprise some. sure, the fighters in showtime’s super middleweight tournament are not household names. abraham. froch. taylor. ward. dirrell. kessler. but what they do have is serious branding and a first-ever format in the sport. with 2004 olympic gold medal winner and american andre ward’s upset of mikkel kessler last night (a belt that he had defended ten straight times), this is must-see television. i love the effort they’ve put into promotions, the events look like a million dollars and the fighters are bringing it in the ring. that’s a complete brand experience. i like the round robin format that will take over a year to complete, which means the best fighter will remain standing in the end. nice job showtime! you still need better commentators (antonio tarver is a joke), but you’ve got yourself a winner here.
