i’m engaged in a bit of a turf battle these days and want to remind my fellow business owners about a few basic rules of engagement. 1: it’s always about the customer. don’t get mad at me if i can serve them better than you can. you didn’t listen, you fell asleep or out of touch, etc. it happens to every successful/comfortable/aging business. 2: these are your shortcomings. maybe it’s time to look at yourself instead of blaming others for why things are the way they are. 3: there’s always room for competition. customers want options. you can’t monopolize. 4: if you choose to get personal, then don’t expect me to follow suit. allow me to turn my other cheek. your disrespect only tells me that i’m doing something very right indeed. 5: don’t stray off subject. focus. i want a good, clean fight. touch gloves. show me what you’ve got. if you win, the customer wins — and i’ll be happy for that.
