with so many lines getting blurred these days between what’s business and what’s personal (for some, work is definitely personal), i’ve taken to maintaining one facebook account for both. people can see my work and personal topics with no filter. i know this isn’t the top news story for the day, but i just don’t see the point in a business or fan page. i mean, why should a down-to-earth solo practitioner hide his opinions and passions? i don’t require fanatics — a simple “good job” is nice at the end of the day. if people hire me, then it’s generally because they either like or respect my perspective and talents. why create unnecessary distance? i don’t deny that a certain number of customers, partners and vendors don’t share my views and interests, or that some of my viewpoints will miss the mark. however, i also think there’s value in letting people know where you stand (or that you stand for certain things). no matter what words you choose, having a perspective is strength. when people seek advice, they gravitate towards those with ideas, leadership, confidence, etc. you get my point here.
