yes, prince announced this week that he believes the internet is dead for independent recording artists. no, he didn’t just do it for a publicity stunt on brink of releasing his latest record 20ten (though it did make for a nice followup to winning bet’s lifetime achievement award). what prince means by his odd statement is that indie artists can’t count on the internet to generate substantial revenue. if a megastar and innovator like prince can’t make this happen, then you know that lesser acts are struggling to do it. prince would rather license the rights to release 20ten to various newspapers (as an insert, like advertisers do). why? each license commands $1 million u.s. dollars for prince. does that capture your attention and boost his credibility on the matter?
