nfl players are not permitted to post messages on social media websites starting 90 minutes before kickoff and until postgame media obligations are fulfilled. um, why? i get that game time is time to work. yes, but work is a game. it’s entertainment. that means lots of fans and fun. i’m on this subject because of the recent fine dropped by the nfl on chad “ocho cinco” johnson — $25,000 for tweeting in-game. this is totally insane to me. people enjoy ocho. happy fans spend money and make the nfl the continually successful venture it is. let’s cut to the real chase here. what they don’t like is players making too big of a name for themselves. like ocho cinco and his 1,182,915 followers on twitter. they want teams to be the brands — not players. that’s because brands are worth more and more money. where players become a bigger and bigger deal, they cost teams more and more money to retain their services. it’s like chad said upon getting fined —”first time twitter hasn’t made me money but cost me money” — exactly.
