thanks to client and fellow recording artist pete connell of the curbfeelers for recommending the first chapter in an interesting read on rebooting the american dream. the author, thom hartmann, discusses a number of old concepts (ie. tariffs) that could be a valid part of the solution. what caught my eye was this bit under the final paragraph — “have the government support new and emerging industries through tax policy, direct grants and funding…in japan, it’s the ministry of industry and trade that helped develop the lexus…there is no shame in subsidizing our own companies — so long as they show their loyalty to the nation by employing american workers, investing in american enterprises, and not engaging in international business ventures that hurt america.” interesting. reminds me of a conversation i had with a manager at fedex office last week. i asked him if customers requested newer forms of marketing services that weren’t print-based — like search engine optimization (seo) or social media marketing. he said yes, and that they outsource to a group in india. not helping!
