after a sloppy public exchange of demands and commentary, the yankees and team captain derek jeter reached agreement on a deal over the weekend. best friends forever (all over again). surprisingly, the yankees upped their offer from three years and $45 million to same term and $51 million. they only did so once jeter limped back to the table (other teams weren’t touching him with a longer than ten foot pole). while i’m happy to see the two sides mending fences and preparing for another championship run, i’m a bit unsettled by how the brands suffered in the interim of these negotiations. two class acts stumbled, and fans were left scratching heads.
