it’s an email that any business owner and his/her marketing firm likes to see happening. the world (@theworld) is now following you on twitter! of course, like all forms of smart marketing, growing your following on twitter is not mostly about quantity — quality matters in a big way. yes, there’s something to having your business exposed to as many people as possible. they get friends to follow you who could be based on need (whereas the person you added was not). just don’t forget that only certain types will take the desired action(s) that really change your business’ bottom line. carpet bombing as a marketing approach gets you a tiny response — usually in the ballpark of .025 or one quarter of one percent. for example, if you were to tweet to your 1,000 followers, then that’s 25 people who really care. 10% may take action. that leaves you with 3 legitimate leads. this isn’t what you expected to hear, i’m guessing.
if your plan is to seek new followers without any serious look into who they are and what matters to them, then you’re wasting a ton of time. you could spend a few months getting to 5,000 followers who are only wanting you to buy from them, or are wanting you to enjoy their rambles and babbling). you should be carefully cultivating new prospects and leads who are open to buying from you. there are two key questions to consider — 1) what do they highlight in the introduction of their twitter account and 2) who are they following? these will provide huge hints into what’s important to them and whether or not they would make a good follower for your business.
