i said no, no, no! actually — i said maybe, somewhat, only so far. one of the first things to realize about the best in marketing is that it’s a dichotomous affair — one part go where others are, and a second part go where few or no one has been. where you strike the balance determines not only the impression of your brand, but also the success of your products. too reverent and you’re safe. old school. snooze. too irreverent and you’re out there. i’m not sure. oh, that’s diff-er-ent. the easiest places to run are either end of the scale. business owners should decide where they want to be in the mix, with the real work being done in the middle area. that’s the hash part. the rehash is once you mix together your classic and fresh ingredients, how appealing is the final plate? if it’s like the garbage plate i once ordered in college, then look out. i did that for a bit of sublime fun — and i don’t recommend that approach for businesses. i’ve come to appreciate the kind of hash i found in a charleston breakfast nook. old with new. richly textured. aromatic. fresh. inviting. fun.
